It's hard to review an insurance product. If you're not a security lab, and if you're not prepared to expose your computer to viruses to see what happens, then you're only guessing if this works.
That said, Mac users are making a mistake if they don't get virus protection on their computer. Those of us who have worked in security/risk management understand that it's only a matter of time until Macs get hit with malware. Mac users who say "it'll never happen to me" are part of the problem, because they don't often show the kind of common sense that Windows users have had to develop.
Don't be that Mac user. Buy this and use it. It's widely accepted to be the best of the Mac-oriented anti-virus products, and you can get a version that includes PC protection too if you live in a dual-platform family. Just do it. Oh, and back your computer up regularly before it crashes, because you shouldn't be that person, either.
